The Details of Degaussing Hard Drive
A process called degaussing is one of ways in which IT experts remove data. Degaussing of hard drives removes data in order to completely erase the magnetic field from electronic media.
Hard Drives Degaussing
Hard drives and other storage devices like computer tapes store magnet field data. These storage media contain magnetic material layers.
A degustation machine subjected a disc to a magnetic field of high intensity, which completely rearranged the magnetic structure. The degausser randomizes the magnetization patterns by applying alternating magnetic amplitude fields. The final outcome is irrecoverable data.
It can no longer be used for storage after a drive has been discarded. However, some facts to remember.
- Is it possible to recover data from a degaussed disc? No, not that. It is impossible to retrieve the data once a drive is discharged.
- Can a disc with degaussing be used? No, not so. Any system can't operate a discharged drive. The magnetic erasure rearranges this magnetic field to such an extent that a magnetic reference point is not found to track standard read heads.
- Is it possible to degauss with an ordinary magnet running on a hard disc? No. Not powerful enough standard magnets to defuse a hard drive. The erasure of data can only be guaranteed by an industrial degausser.
- Is any degausser able to delete data? It is not like that. A degausser should emit two to three times greater magnetic strength than the magnetic intensity of the hard disc in order to be completely effective. Some commercially available debugging devices are too weak for the data to be deleted. A NSA-recommended degausser is important to use.
- How important is hard drive degaussing? The first step is to destroy data completely. The destruction of sensitive data is required by law in the context of regulations such as HIPAA, GLB-Act and NSA requirements.
- Is degustation damaging to other types (DLT, SDLT, 3480, AIT) of tape storage? Degaussers emit such strong magnetic fields that virtually any magnetic storage device can be erased.
- Can USB data be degusted to destroy it? Not that USB memory devices are working on a solid state memory, which does not depend on the same hard drive or tape storage magnetic structure.
- Is data destruction degaussing the final step? Even when degaussing is a safe way to erase information, the NSA recommends that after degaussing media be physically destroyed / shredded.
The National Security Administration does not approve of every degausser for official use.
